COLOSSIANS 3:13 – THE GARMENTS OF HOLINESS
BEAR WITH EACH OTHER AND FORGIVE WHAT EVER GRIEVANCES YOU MAY HAVE AGAINST ONE ANOTHER. FORGIVE AS THE LORD FORGAVE YOU.
– COLOSSIANS 3:13
NOVEMBER 13, 2010 – THE NEW BIBLE COMMENTARY
PAGE 1050
THE GARMENTS OF HOLINESS (COLOSSIANS 3:12-17)
The virtues of (Col 3:12) are to take the place of the vices of (Col 3:8). The putting off of the old garment is to be followed by the putting on of the new. (Eph 4:25-31)
Elect…holy and beloved (Col 3:12); an allusion to the covenant relation of the Old Testament.
The words apply in a new nobler sense to the new Israel of God. this privilege is the basis of the Christian’s great responsibility.
The splanchna, translated ‘bowels’, were regarded as the seat of the affections.
Longsuffering (Col 3:12); the ability to endure with patience all misunderstanding and opposition.
If the Master forgives His servants how much the more should they forgive one another. [Our Lord's parable in (Mathew 18:23-35)!]
…’love is the outter garment which holds the others in their places’.
The peace of God, the peace of Christ (John 14:27) is to be the ‘umpire’ in all things.
When occasions of dispute arise in the fellowship (notice the reference to one body) …then the peace of Christ is to give the decision. This is, of course, an exhortation to cultivate the peace-loving temper.
*** The Christian message is to be so deeply rooted in the life that it governs the believer’s thinking (Col 3:16)***
Some of the hymns and spiritual songs were probably spontaneous expressions of praise.
…the unpremeditated spirituals… (Eph 5:19)
Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus (Col 3:17). The reference here is not to the invocation of His name. It is an exhortation to the Christian to do everything as in His presence and unto Him. The recurrent empasis on thanksgiving echoes (Col 2:7)
MATTHEW 18:21-22
“THEN PETER CAME TO HIM AND ASKED, LORD HOW OFTEN
SHALL MY BROTHER SIN AGAINST ME, AND I FORGIVE HIM?
UP TO SEVEN TIMES? JESUS SAID TO HIM, “I DO NOT SAY
TO YOU, UP TO SEVEN TIMES, BUT UP TO SEVENTY TIMES
SEVEN.”
( MATTHEW 18:21-22 *NKJV )
against asked brother But came do forgive Him how Jesus Lord not often Peter said say seven seventy shall sin then times up you
