God’s Wrath Substituted
Satan’s work is not the chief peril dealt with in the death of Christ. God’s wrath is.
God is opposed to us in his righteous wrath, and he is for us in his love. Therefore, in his great love, he sends his Son to endure his own wrath against us.
In this way, his righteousness is upheld and his love is expressed. His wrath and curse and condemnation of our sin are endured for us by another- a substitute, Jesus Christ. Here are some of the texts that teach this:
“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” (John 3:36).
“Since . . . we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God” (Romans 5:9).
“[We] were by nature children of wrath . . . . But God . . . made us alive together with Christ” (Ephesians 2:3-4).
